From 1 August 2014, Australian chip cards will require a PIN instead of signature to transact at point of sale (POS). As a merchant there are some simple steps you can follow to ensure the PIN requirement does not adversely impact you or your customers. Most importantly this means knowing when PIN is required and following the terminal prompts.   

When is a PIN required?

·        Australian chip cards will require a PIN. This includes Australian debit, credit and reloadable pre-paid cards.

When is a PIN not required?  

·        Contactless transactions under $100

·        Transactions under $35 that do not require PIN or signature today

·        Magneticstripe only cards - cards without a chip

·        Transactions made over the internet and phone.

Who is exempt?

·        Overseascardholders (i.e. cards issued overseas)

·        A small number of Australians will be issued cards that allow them to sign due totheir individual circumstances.  

Starting 1 August, POS terminals across the country will gradually be upgraded to request PIN when an Australian chip card is inserted. This means you simply need to follow the terminal prompts to know when PIN is required and when signature is allowed.

If the terminal reads:

ENTER PIN or OK – Signature is allowed

ENTER PIN – PIN is required

How can you take payment if the cardholder doesnot know their PIN?

1.      Ask the customer if they have another card that they know the PIN for and use that card.

2.      If the terminal and the card are contactless enabled and the transaction is under$100, conduct a contactless transaction for which you will not require a PIN.

3.       Contact your acquirer to ask how you can accept the transaction where the cardholder cannot remember their PIN.

When is a PIN required?
必须使用密码的情况：
•        Australian chip cards will require a PIN. This includes Australian debit, credit and reloadable pre-paid cards.
•        澳大利亚银带芯片的银行卡都需要使用密码，包括储蓄卡、信用卡和一些预充值卡。
When is a PIN not required?  
可以不使用密码的情况：

•        不满$100的非接触性交易（如paypass，paywave）
•        Transactions under $35 that do not require PIN or signature today
•        低于$35，并且在目前模式下本身不需要使用密码或签名的交易

自8月1日起，会在全国范围内对POS机进行升级，从而使得带有芯片的卡插入机器后，POS机会自动要求输入密码。也就是说，你只需要遵照POS机提示操作就可以知道，是必须输入密码，还是签名也可以。
If the terminal reads:
如果POS机显示：
ENTER PIN or OK – Signature is allowed
输入密码或按OK——可以接受签名
ENTER PIN – PIN is required
输入密码——必须使用密码
How can you take payment if the cardholder doesnot know their PIN?
如果持卡人不知道自己的密码该怎么办？
1.        Ask the customer if they have another card that they know the PIN for and use that card.
问客人是否有其他知道密码的卡，然后用那张卡
2.        If the terminal and the card are contactless enabled and the transaction is under$100, conduct a contactless transaction for which you will not require a PIN.
如果你有非接触式刷卡设备（如：paypass机器），而消费金额不满$100，你可以使用该设备完成交易，因为不再需要密码。
3.        Contact your acquirer to ask how you can accept the transaction where the cardholder cannot remember their PIN.
